    How healthcare works for expats

Georgia's State Universal Healthcare Programme covers Georgian citizens and certain groups such as refugees, stateless people and registered asylum seekers, with patient co-payments for many services. Hospitals and clinics are largely privately run, and the UK Foreign Office describes medical facilities in Tbilisi as available but expensive, and limited outside the capital.

    Public care and state schemes

Foreign visitors and residents are not covered by the state programme on the same basis as citizens and pay for treatment themselves or through insurance. The UK has no reciprocal healthcare agreement with Georgia.

    Private hospitals

Tbilisi has a wide choice of private clinics and hospitals, many of which publish prices online, often with time-limited promotional discounts. Some, such as A CLINIC, list consultation fees in GEL for English-speaking doctors.

    Paying up front

The FCDO advises that you or your insurer will need to pay for all treatment as it is provided. Since 1 January 2026 foreign tourists must hold health and accident insurance of at least 30,000 GEL for their whole stay.

    Health insurance rules for foreigners

All foreign tourists and visitors, including visa-free travellers

Must hold health and accident insurance with cover of at least 30,000 GEL for the entire stay, including arrival and departure dates. The policy may be from a Georgian or foreign insurer, in physical or electronic form, in Georgian or English. Diplomatic and official passport holders and some treaty cases are exempt.10,11,12

    British citizens

Can visit without a visa for up to one year but must carry insurance meeting the 30,000 GEL minimum. The UK has no reciprocal healthcare agreement with Georgia, so all treatment must be paid for by the patient or their insurer.11,13

Foreigners living or working in Georgia (not tourists)

The insurance requirement is set by the Law on Tourism and applies to tourists, defined as people staying no longer than a year and not employed by a Georgian institution. The state residence permit service does not list health insurance among its permit types and fees, and the state programme is aimed at citizens and specific protected groups.14,15,16

    Foreign workers and self-employed foreigners

A new work permit regime took effect on 1 March 2026 (enforcement for self-employed foreigners from 1 May 2026, and permits needed by labour immigrants by 1 January 2027). No health insurance requirement is stated for the permit.17

    Tips before you buy cover

    • Each traveller, including children and infants, needs their own policy in their own name; one family policy is not accepted.
    • Carry the policy in English or Georgian, printed or on your phone, as border officials can ask to see it.
    • Many Tbilisi clinics run standing promotions on scans, often on set days of the week, so the same MRI or CT can cost much less if booked on a promotion day.
    • Antibiotics such as amoxicillin are prescription medicines in Georgia, so bring a prescription or see a local doctor first.
    • Outside Tbilisi facilities are limited, so check that any cover includes transfer to the capital or medical evacuation.
