Long-trip travel insurance: cover for months, not weeks

Some travel policies allow a six-month trip, but only if the policy's maximum trip length covers every day of it. Single-trip maximums on the plans we list include 180 days, 365 days and 12 months. Annual multi-trip plans cap each trip, at 30, 45 or 90 days, or 180 days for under-65s on one plan. Six calendar months is 181 to 184 days, so a 180-day limit can fall short.

Check the maximum trip length first

Many policies have a maximum trip length, an annual limit on total time spent outside your home country, or both. If your trip is longer than the maximum, you may not be covered for the days beyond it. The UK government's advice for long trips is to check the maximum duration of any 'long-stay' policy carefully, and to make sure the whole policy fits, including activities and any paid or unpaid work.

    Single-trip, annual multi-trip or short-term health insurance

A single-trip plan covers one continuous journey with a start and end date. An annual multi-trip plan covers many shorter trips in a year, each up to a set number of days. Short-term international health insurance runs for 1 to 12 months, for people travelling or living abroad for a limited time. Annual international health insurance renews each year, so it isn't tied to a trip or a return date.

Buying or extending while you're already away

Some plans can be bought after you've left home or while already travelling, often with a waiting period before cover starts; others must be bought before you travel. Some can be extended on the road. Check the plan's rules before your current cover ends. If the trip includes a medical evacuation limit, see medical evacuation cover.

When a long trip becomes living abroad

Travel insurance is not intended for permanent residence abroad. If you're moving to live, work or study in another country, the UK government says to consider your insurance needs carefully; local law may require medical insurance, including for a visa. Of the 21 digital nomad and remote work visas we checked, 15 require health insurance, and Spain's digital nomad visa does not accept travel insurance. See travel insurance vs health insurance and the nomad visa insurance rules.

    Common questions

Does travel insurance cover a 6-month trip?
It can, if the policy's maximum trip length covers the whole trip. Six calendar months is 181 to 184 days, so check that a 180-day limit is long enough for your dates.
What is the longest trip travel insurance will cover?
It depends on the plan. Among the travel plans we list, single-trip maximums include 180 days, 365 days and 12 months, and one plan can be extended to 24 months.
Is annual multi-trip insurance good for a long trip?
Usually not on its own. Annual multi-trip plans cap the length of each trip, for example at 30, 45 or 90 days, so one long journey can exceed the cap.
Can I buy travel insurance when I'm already abroad?
Some plans allow it, often with a waiting period before cover starts; others must be bought before you leave. Check the plan's rules.
When do I need health insurance instead of travel insurance?
When you are living abroad rather than travelling. The UK government says travel insurance is not intended for permanent residence abroad, and 15 of the 21 nomad visas we checked require health insurance.
Does long-stay travel insurance cover routine care?
Generally no. Travel medical plans cover sudden illness and accidents, not routine check-ups or ongoing treatment.
