Moving from the United States
A Marketplace plan does not move with you
A Healthcare.gov or state-exchange plan covers care in its US service area. It is not a policy for living in another country, and the premium tax credit is not a subsidy for international insurance. If you have left the US to live abroad, check the marketplace rules on a change of residence before you assume the plan is still in force.
Information only, not insurance, tax, or benefits advice. Official rules and your plan documents take precedence. Checked 4 October 2026.
Why it is a separate page
People ask this after they have already heard that Medicaid will not pay. An exchange plan can feel like the private alternative. It is still US-resident cover, with a US network and US enrollment rules. Short trips are a different question from a move. For the move, price international cover. This page is not tax advice.
Common questions
- Can I keep a Healthcare.gov plan if I move abroad?
- Marketplace plans are for people living in a US service area. A permanent move overseas is not a change of US address. Do not assume the plan or the subsidy continues.
- Does the premium tax credit work abroad?
- The credit is for eligible coverage while you meet US residency and income rules. It is not a grant for an international policy.
